Arcadia University head Women’s Soccer Coach Rick Brownell has been named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Brownell, who completed his seventh season at the helm of the Knights’ soccer program in 2009, led the Arcadia University women to a 6-1 record against Commonwealth Conference opponents as they secured the #2 seed for just their second Commonwealth tournament since joining the league in 2008. Although the team finished as the runners-up to defending league and NCAA Division III champions, Messiah College, Brownell’s team compiled a 15-2-3 overall mark that included a 16-game undefeated streak with 14 shutouts.

Also selected as the Commonwealth Coach of the Year for the 2009 season, Brownell returns a full starting lineup to the field in 2010, including forward Janelle Jablonski ’11, midfielder Katie O’Malley ’11, defender Brittany Drosdak ’12 and starting keeper Jackie Law ’13, all named to the 2009 Commonwealth’s First Team.

Having compiled a 76-44-17 career overall record (35-17-7 conference), Brownell has led his team into post-season play in each of his seven seasons as head coach, making three conference finals appearances and earning a league in 2005 when the Knights competed in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC). With a defense ranked among the top five in Division III in 2009, the team set a program record for most wins (15) and fewest losses (2) in a single season under Brownell’s tutelage.

Collegiate coaches who achieved success during the 2009 season have been recognized with the NSCAA/Adidas Regional Coach of the Year award and are selected based on a vote of their peers within their region. Regional Coaches of the Year are finalists for the NSCAA/Adidas National Coach of the Year award at their respective levels. The national awards will be announced at the annual NSCAA Awards Banquet in early January, which will be held as part of the 2009 NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia.
