While most college students were busy carving pumpkins and assembling Halloween costumes, Zachary McKenna ’13 and Nick Bongarzone ’13 declared it the month of ‘Hawktober’ in the name of prostate cancer.

On Oct. 2, a group of male Arcadia students drew a lot of attention at the Glenside Street Fair, when, one-by-one, each volunteer went under the blade for a mohawk. They will be sporting the punk culture coif for the month of October to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer. Volunteers were asked to donate a minimum of $10, in exchange for a very public haircut done by volunteer stylists from Floyd’s Barber Shop, Willow Grove, Pa. All proceeds benefit the Fox Chase Cancer Center.“Most of the students that participated were first-year students,” explains Bongarzone. “In only an hour, we raised $105. Members of the Glenside community loved the reaction of the students and how busy the barber was cutting hair. The event was so popular, it was continued on campus later that day by amateur student barbers.” Bongarzone and McKenna are continuing to collaborate with Floyd’s Barber Shop to organize a larger event later this month.
