Conway Researches Orthopedic Complications in Patients with Costello Syndrome

The American Journal of Medical Genetics recently published “Orthopedic manifestations and implications for individuals with Costello syndrome,” co-authored by Dr. Laura Conway, assistant director of genetic counseling.

The group of researchers studied 43 participants, and identified 25 orthopedic manifestations including hyptonia, ligamentous laxity, scoliosis, kyphosis, characteristic hand deformities, ulnar deviation of the wrist, elbow and shoulder contractures, tight Achilles tendon and pes planus. The research concludes that patients affected by Costello syndrome should visit an orthopedic surgeon regularly; in addition, it suggests that screening protocols for hip and spine be instituted to benefit these patients.
