Dr. Bruce Campbell, assistant professor of education, will discuss his Honors course, “HBO’s ‘The Wire’: Deconstructing the Opportunity Gap in America,” on WURD 900 AM’s “Wake Up with WURD” on Tuesday, Sept. 24, from 7 to 10 a.m. To join the conversation about the course, check out #AUTheWire on Twitter.
Using HBO’s The Wire Season Four as a roadmap, this course explores the current landscape of American Education with an emphasis on examining the institutions and other structural variables which pervade inequality. The Wire’s dramatic narrative is being complemented by readings, clips and other media that offer the students an interdisciplinary perspective of our education system and its political, economic, social and cultural dimensions. Students also gain valuable insight into the internal and external forces that shape the daily realities of students and families living in distressed communities. We examine the notion of the “opportunity gap” through many lenses, including resource allocation, accountability, expectations, equality and socioeconomic status. Students actively participate in activities and discussions aimed at deconstructing the variables affecting quality education. Every class begin and end with the same fundamental question: How does a student with limited resources but unlimited potential achieve the American Dream?
